Beginner Dressmaking Course


Learn how to use a commercial pattern to make your own garment. We cover sizing, pattern markings, fitting, cutting out, sewing fastenings, and finishing.

The garment will be an A line/straight skirt.

Cost: £180 - 5 x 2 hour classes, suitable for those who can thread up and do basic stitching on a sewing machine.

Or

Cost: £199- Combine with ‘lesson zero’ - machine sewing intro, for those who are complete beginners or need a brush up on machine/sewing basics. We offer this discounted cost for all six lessons.

You must be able to already use a sewing machine to book this course. If you don’t know how to thread it up and sew straight stitch, you will need to book our lesson zero too (link above).

You don’t need to have your own machine, but if you don’t you will need to hire one of ours. Please add the appropriate machine rental to your order (next to course option).

Location:

This term classes are held in South Nutfield, Surrey (full address given once booked) . There is some free parking at the location, and free on road parking.

Each class is about 2 hours long.

Please arrive no earlier than 5 minutes beforehand to set up your equipment and get settled in. We start promptly at the times stated - we have lots to fit in!!

If you want to book the full course but cannot make one of the dates, you can book the lesson you will miss as private tuition. This would be £40 extra per 2 hour lesson*, discounted from the usual £40 per hour private tuition which would be £80. Please use the contact form to let us know about this after you have booked.

*this discounted private tuition price only applies when booking/booked on to the full course.

 

Fabrics:

You will need to purchase fabric, along with a matching zip and thread, for your garment in advance of lesson 2. We will let you know yardages and suitable fabric choices once you have booked via our welcome letter.

 

Sewing machines and equipment:

It is best if you bring your own machine so that you become competent on the one you use at home. Or you can hire one of ours if you don’t have one (small surcharge per lesson). If your machine is brand new and you don't know how to work it at all - you will also need to join us for beginner lesson zero. This course is not suitable for those who have never used a sewing machine.

We will supply a list of the equipment you need in your welcome letter once booked.

Beginners Dressmaking Lesson 1: Sizing and Pattern adjustments

Measuring the body

Understanding commercial patterns, markings and terminology

Sizing your pattern and cut out mock up

Beginners Dressmaking Lesson 2: Mock up fitting and adjustments

Sew mock up in practice fabric to a fitting stage

Learn about basic fitting adjustments and how to translate these to the flat pattern

Cut out final fabric if you have time

Beginners Dressmaking Lesson 3: Begin sewing

Finish cutting out, edging and insert your zip

Beginners Dressmaking Lesson 4: Continue sewing

Main seams and adding a waistband

Beginners Dressmaking Lesson 5: Finish sewing

Hem and add final fastening.
